DAVIDIC COVENANT

JESUS AND THE DAVIDIC COVENANT

The promise to the Davidic: line continue into the future. God tell the kingly house of david  ( Isaiah 7:13) That it will receive a sign Behold a virgin will be with child and bear a son and she will call his name Immanuel ” ( 7:14 ). The son of david will be the child and God will gave him to the Jewish people as a blessing ( 9:6 ) He has one long and unbroken name: Wonder counselor; Mighty God : Eternal Father; Prince of Peace;  And there will be no end to the increase of his government of peace. On the throne of David and over the kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with Justice and righteousness for then on and for evermore. The zeal of the lord of host will accomplished this ( 9:7 ).

About this son of David unger ( P. 1168 ) writes: His rule as Prince of peace will be universal in the earth and perpetual —- The millennium kingdom ultimately merging into the Eternal kingdom ( 1 Corinthian 15:24-28;Revelation 22:1-5 ) …….. He will reign as David son ( humanity )  and Lord ( deity ) as the Divine human Redeemer ( Revelation 19:16; 20:4-6 ) in fulfillment of the Davadic Covemant ( 2 Samuel 7:12 – 13 ; 23: 1 – 5 ; Ezekiel 34:23 ; 37:24 Hosea 3:5 ; Amos 9:11; Luke 2:4 see also Act 1:6 ) His rule will be eternal “forever” out lasting earthly kingdoms age and merging into the eternal rule of the Lamb Revelation 20:1-3 ).

The Gospel repeatedly refer to Jesus relationship with David and to his covenant. Before the birth of Jesus  the Angel Gabriel told Mary ” He will be great and be call the son of the most high and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. and He will rue over the house of Jacob for ever, and his kingdom will have no end ( Luke 1: 32 – 33 ) Mary also learn that the child in her womb was the promise son of God prophesied in Psalm 2 ( Luke 1:35 ) In her pray of thanksgiving, Mary realize that the birth of her son was some how related to the promise God made unto Abraham. She cry out that God has given help to Israel his servant in remembrance of his mercy as he spoke to our fathers to Abraham and his descendants for ever   ( 1:54-55 ) .

In Zechariah pray of thanks for the birth of his son John ( the Baptist )  He quotes part of the Davidic covenant. He said the God had provided redemption for his people. and had raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David His servant ( Luke 1:68-69 ) He is quoting part of the Psalm of the Davidic Covenant where the Lord speak of David his Servant ( Psalm 89:20 ) and exhalts David horn ( 89:24 ) Zachariah also ties the Davidic Covenants to the Abrahamic promises He prophesies the horn of salvation from David house. Is salvation from Israel enemies “To show mercies to our father, and to remember his holy covenant, the oath which he swore to Abraham our father. ( Luke 1:69-72 ).

As Jesus ministered, even certain blind beggars understood he was the son of David who fulfilled the messianic promises. The blind men cry out, ” have mercy upon us son of David” ( Matthew 9:27 ) Peter and the others disciples realized that the Davidic covenant include many doctrines about the messiah. Peter told his followers Jews that the Messiah by the pre determine plan and foreknowledge of God was nail to the cross and put to death for sin ( Acts 2:23 ). He refer his hearer to David prophecy that the messiah would be the  Holy one who would not suffer decay ( Psalm 16:8- 11; Acts 2:25 – 28 ) God have sworn to David that he would have a descendant who would some day sit on his throne. Therefore the resurrection was certain Acts 2:30 – 31 ).

Peter argue that David could not have been prophesying about himself in Psalms 16 and in other Psalms because david experience death and had not ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of God as Jesus did     (Acts 2:38 ). Peter than quotes Psalms 110:1 and say about Christ, “The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

A LITERAL INTERPRETATION

The Davidic Covenant is to be interpenetrated literally. Five points confirm this in 2 Samuel 7 and Psalm 89  (1.) The Words and grammar convey a literal meaning. They give no indication that we are to spiritualize the promises. (2.) The Covenant is distinctly for the nation of Israel and not the Church. (3.) The Covenant is call a Perpetual Covenant, Scripture give no indication that is is to cease at some point in the future. (4) God confirmed the Covenant with a oath (Psalm 89:3, 4, 33, 132:11 ) (5) God Promise He will never break this Covenant. “My Covenant I will never violate nor will I alter the utterance  of my lips. Once I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to david, His descendants shall endure for ever, and his throne as the Sun before me” ( Psalm 89:34-36 ). God will fulfill the Davidic Covenant when the Lord Jesus reigh on the throne of his father David for 1000 years.

In the Book of Revelation, John the Apostle reminds the Church at Philadelphia that Christ is the one who fulfills the Davidic Covenant. John writes that Christ “is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens( Revelation 3:7 ). Jesus is also the “Lion that is from the Tribe of Judah, the root of David” who has the authority to open the seven sealed book that actually begins the tribulation (5:5 ) And Jesus himself say that He is “the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star” (22:16 ). Jesus reminds the Church of the Davidic Covenant, but he never relates this covenant to the Church! Christ Future Kingly reign is not allegorized to refer to his leadership over the Church.
